I got the new iPhone 6 last Friday and love it. Of course I was upgrading from a 4s. Just seeing if anyone had it and any experiences or flaws?

Post 2 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 22-Sep-2014 14:39:24

Hi there. As a fellow Iphone 4S user, do you find a great deal of difference in its features and performance? It's one thing to read about the specs, quite another to talk to someone who actually uses them. My phone contract isn't up for almost another year, so by the time I upgrade the Iphone 6BFG will probably be out.

Post 3 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Monday, 22-Sep-2014 17:24:23

Absolutely much faster using iOS8 than my 4S was.
I do find it gets hotter, but the thicker 4S had space / air in there that prevented you from feeling the heat. Also the 6 is housed in aluminum, which is a greater heat conductor than glass is. Not dangerously hot, in my opinion. Just something of note.
I really like the Alex voice. The Touch ID looks really promising and I'm sure I'll be tweaking and adding to mine.
It just came today, and I think it'll still fit the pants pockets, jeans being the one I was most concerned about. I realize, at least out here, all the metrosexual young men carry murses around with them everywhere. I've got nothing against them, but that's just too much work when I have pockets to do the trick. So I was a bit concerned about the size difference. If you have a 5 or 5s, it won't be much of a size difference for you. But coming up from a 4S I'm afraid my iPad Mini without retina display might find it gets less use than usual, especially as many sites now crash VoiceOver on it.
Also nice upgrade was to get the 64GB model which meets my needs nicely.
What does intrigue me: the charger that comes with the iPhone 6 looks exactly like the one for my iPad Mini. There may be some technical differences and I'll have to get someone to look. But usually increased watts would yield a bigger brick by necessity. Who knows now, though.
And if the protection circuit inside the device can manage 1.5A or 2A, whatever the Mini uses, without overdoing it in the long run, should be fine.

Post 4 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 22-Sep-2014 18:08:59

Thanks for the info, Leo. Probably be a year before I go there, but nice to know. You said you used your 4S with IOS 8? How did that go? I have IOS 7 on mine right now, but I've read it makes an IOS 6 quite a bit slower.

Post 5 by season (the invisible soul) on Monday, 22-Sep-2014 22:25:34

Uncle leo, Apple has change to lightning connector since iphone 5 and ipad mini and ipad4. There are different wats for different things, you might want to check/. But, for me, i'm using all of my 3 device on the same charger, the iphone5 charger.

I'm waiting for my 6+ to arrive. Its on back order with my telco at the moment. For those that upgrade from 4 or 4s to 6/6+, you definitely see some improvements there.

Post 6 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 23-Sep-2014 11:45:51

I have a 6 and have had it since release day.
The upgrade from the 4S will be markedly different.
One, you will get a larger device. Mine is the 4.7 inch model and a 4S is 3.5 inches. This one will feel wider in your hand and taller. It is tanner and has rounded edges, not square.
The next thing is when finding things on it the screen really goes to the edges of it, so you have to look on both for things, such as when sending a text. That button is almost off the screen if will feel like at first, but you’ll get used to it.
It will work a bit faster, but right now, there seems to be a flaw with iOS 8. It slows down when closing things. That might not be a visual thing, but it is a voice thing. This happened on my 5S as well. It doesn’t happen all the time, and for you the phone will be snappy compared.
The power button is now on the right side, not the top, and for you the earphone is at the bottom. I talk about the power button, because it is softer, and more responsive, but not in the way so you are turning the phone on accidently.
iOS voice quality is better, that isn't the phone, but iOS8.
Leo, it gets warm in the hand. If you use it, and I have, for a long time, it warms up. Not really hot, but warmer than my 5S and due to the 4S being glass lots warmer then that one.
I think for smaller hands, it might be a bit wide, but for finding stuff on the screen, you’ll not notice the size.
The 6+, in my opinion is just too fat. The 6 fits my pants fine. For low vision users, that extra screen size will be a benefit though.
If you listen to music, with iOS8, you’ll notice a quality improvement. It is like day and night. I don’t know why this is, but is you are playing iTunes music, you’ll really notice it. Other tracks too.
If you sync your phone with your computer, this may change.
I think it grabs your iTunes sounds settings on your computer. Out of the box, that sound quality is fabulous though. This is also an iOS8 feature, because I got that quality on my 5S when I set it back to factory. Maybe Apple is fooling with these 64 Bits.
Just don’t sync, you may lose it. Loll
Last, I think the 6 is really a class act.

Post 7 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 23-Sep-2014 19:06:18

I agree, the iphone 6 is really classy.
Yes, iOS8 will slow down your 4s.

Post 8 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 24-Sep-2014 11:25:13

The battery in the 6 is fantastic! I had the Wife get Her reading glasses - could have used a microscope - and read the input and output voltage on both the chargers. Looks like the iPad Mini and iPhone 6 use the same charging volts / amps. With such a tiny brick size, that makes sense. Those charging bricks are so small that there's just not extra space in there, so adding resistor coils would have been noticeable. Admittedly, I'm sure there are a lot of changes to charging technology that I don't know about, but stepping power up and down is still the same as it's always been, since the technology was invented.
Anyway, I was sick yesterday and so was farting around on my iPhone using Youtube and other apps most the day, gave it a top-off when I could nap a bit, but it seriously out-performed the 4s by leaps and bounds.

Post 9 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 24-Sep-2014 15:21:45

My only disappointment is they still ahven't added any additional buttons other than the volume control. I'd just like a means of controlling what I'm listening to without either finding it with the touch screen or using a set of apple-compatible ear buds. It's not really a big deal, It would just be nice sometimes.

Post 10 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 24-Sep-2014 23:56:59

Turn on Hey Siri and talk to it. Smile.
"Hey Siri pause the music." You can also use the home button to ask Siri to do things.
Earphones with the 3 Buttons are best though. Most are Apple compatible anymore, so you have a wide variety to choose from.
I'm going from the 5S to the 6, so many things you are finding Leo have not changed for me. Smile.
Most of the changes are in the OS, not the device itself.

Post 11 by Tila Tequila! (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2014 10:56:15

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, it has been a crazy week. If I had the 5s I wouldn't of upgraded but going from the 4s to the 6 was a little different.

My local ATT store was running a deal where if you got the new iphone you could sell your iphone back to them and get a free ipad mini.

So the chargers for the iphone 6 and the ipad I got are the same. Not sure of the past models.

I do like that its thinner. Its a little longer than I like overall but it is a lot lot faster and thats definitely a good change.

They did have an update yesterday they recalled and if you installed it before it was taken back it actually made your phone where you could not call, your phone actually said no service. But they are putting out a new update asap.

Post 12 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2014 11:36:37

That was 8.1. If you avoided it good.
That was a problem with the OS, not the device, so others suffered it as well.
Yes, all the new devices use the lightening plugs. Buying the 3RD party cables doesn't seem to be a savings. For some reason, they quit working in short order.
If you have to buy new ones all the time, I'd guess you should just pay the price for the Apple certified cables.
I have kept my original 5S cable for a year with no problems, but have purchased several others for myself, and a friend, and they just aren't any good.
I read an article on this, so now I know I'm not crazy, or heavy handed.
Here's a thing I've forgotten.
These phones will bend, and scratch easy. The 6 is even more prone to this sort of damage because in a sight pocket, it get warm and the metal is thin, so it will bend.
Apple had problems with the others, 5S and 5 too, but this ones bigger, especially the 6+.
So, don't keep it in your tight jeans all day.
This is an argument for a sturdy case as well.
Apple may, or may not replace it, that depends on how it got bent.

Post 13 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2014 11:52:50

It was a problem with OS, but only affected 6, and 6 plus devices. No complaints of inability to make calls and/or loss of finger print reader on any of the previous generation phones.

Post 14 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2014 13:04:37

Good info RE: the phone bending, Wayne.
I do take mine out and put it on my desk. I guess if I was working in an office where I had to interact ith coworkers live, I would be wearing business slacks anyway.
I might get a case when they come out, but so many of the cases really make the phone fat for a tight poket.
Anyway I saw the whole thing on 8.1 but sort of after the fact: I never tried to upbrade my device. Though, I sure would like such an update for my iPad mini. It's really easy to crash the VoiceOver on it now.

Post 15 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2014 21:49:20

Apple took it down 8.1, so no worries about getting it.
There are lots of cases on the market now. I ordered an cheap one, but would like the Mophie again, so waiting until they get it marketed if they do. They way there working on them.

Post 16 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 26-Sep-2014 11:42:59

Wow, a phone that could mold itself to the shape of my ass, what more could a girl want? lmao.
Sadly, my 5S and I took an unexpected swim in my parents' pool on Labor Day weekend. I couldn't be without my phone for that long so got it replaced with the insurance. No 6S in my near future therefore. As for IOS 8, I think I'll wait a month or 2 until they get all the bugs worked out and every other person in the world isn't trying to download it from Apple's server. I'm enjoyinghearing about everyone's experiences though.

Post 17 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 26-Sep-2014 13:47:22

Hmm. Now if a girl had the silver colored phone and the ass molding was reflective.
Makes me wonder if the techs that have to decide if she gets it replaced will go on the quality of the mold?
On the swimming ability of the 6. It is said it can swim for 10 minutes. I'll not test this though.

Post 18 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Friday, 26-Sep-2014 19:01:45

I'm glad to know someone else has such bad luck with cables that are not Apple-made.
since I became an iPhone user back in 2011, I can't tell you how many chargers I've gone through.
I know I'm not a heavy-handed person, but it's really nice to know that, like Wayne, I'm not alone in this experience.

Post 19 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Friday, 26-Sep-2014 19:14:57

I do have an older charging brick and iPhone cable that went with the older devices, it never had a problem. Even had the cute folding prongs so it stored better. I was initially skeptical but the brick looks solid.
Most these cables you get that are Apple knockoffs come from China or somewhere, and it has nothing to do with you being "heavy-handed". It's just cheap junky materials.
If you want to read about cheap junk, Google the EPad. The resistors and doping on that board were so bad it literally got hot enough to burn some people's legs. And it wasn't the battery in that instance: it was the board. That was an Android device, not an Apple, but it was to be a cheaper iPad back in 2011 or so.

Post 20 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Friday, 26-Sep-2014 22:35:54

yeah, I've heard that the cheap cables often come from China. in fact, I have two cables right now, and one of them is definitely a cheapy, cause if it's plugged in, it occasionally says something about the cable not being able to support the device.

Post 21 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 27-Sep-2014 9:07:07

I purchased the quality 3RD party cables even, and some cheaper ones, and all that are lightening don't last.
Now, as Leo has experienced, the older 30 pin cables, I never had a problem with any of them.
I could purchase these on Ebay or whatever, and they work just fine, and I didn't need to replace them at all.
Apple lightening cables last, but not the 3RD party. It is an interesting thing.

Post 22 by season (the invisible soul) on Saturday, 27-Sep-2014 21:15:01

If you get non apple certify apple cables, you might have battery shortage problems as the result of it. Apple certify cables got a protective metal in the cable itself, to turn the charging off when its done. However, most non apple certify cable does not have that. Means, it won't authomaticly turn to charging off even its on 100% charged. It will keep feeding it in to the battery.

Post 23 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 27-Sep-2014 23:25:36

Ah, that's good to know about the Apple cables.
Like yall, I've had problems with the knockoffs in Lightening. The 30-pin, golden. Lightening? Not so much. Actually, not at all. I bought one that looked really cool because it was marketed as being bendable. That should have been my first clue. lol Anyway, it first said it didn't work onn any of our 5's and then promply kicked the bucket. GRRR
Oh, speaking of all of our 5's, yall will never believe this. I got my hubs to switch to an IPhone finally and he loves it. Yes, I'm having to bight my tongue and not say "I told you so." lol

Post 25 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Monday, 29-Sep-2014 11:50:27

Ok more on the iPhone 6 battery:
I used the cab company app this weekend to go to an event. Unfortunately Portland won't allow Uber and Lift in yet, but anyway. TaxiMagic it is. So with the 4S this would've drained the battery like a bathtub with a bullet hole in it. But the 6 went fine.
Used up some, of course, but not a ton.
Now, I do keep the background refresh turned off in Settings, because I was able to see who was doing what to whom, and there were a lot of apps I wasn't even running that were running shit in the background when I turned that on.
I've got a city event to work as a volunteer this weekend, and I'm very happy about the state of my new phone's battery. I have one of those externals, the kind that are the size of a soap bar with a button and a whole host of adapters, Proporta I believe it is. Good for a top-off or something when sitting down for a bit.
Oooh and the T-Mobile LTE network is extremely nice. Had been using 4G beforehand, but now. How amazing and cool is that?

Post 26 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 29-Sep-2014 18:21:17

Are you awear that under settings/usage/battery, you can see what apps are using how much power?

Post 27 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 30-Sep-2014 12:40:56

Yes, and I do love that feature. It's sure a lot easier to keep track, and watch for nefarious battery usage coming from places where I had not used it.

Post 28 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 30-Sep-2014 16:34:25

I like to stop all apps running I am not currently using. I don't know if this is saving power, but maybe.
My battery seems about the same, but again, I upgraded from the 5S, and it was exactly 1 year old, so the battery hadn't time to start the downhill slide.

Post 29 by Chris N (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 30-Sep-2014 20:10:25

I have the 6 Plus, and the battery as compared with the 4S is awesome. The larger screen makes Braille text entry much easier. Phone fits in the pockets of my jeans or slacks without a problem.

I have a 5S, and I don't like iOs 8 at all. For one, I can't dial extensions anymore. And I'm having issues with battery draining issues and Touch Id. I never had these issues until iOs 8.

Post 31 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 02-Oct-2014 20:17:38

Update if you haven't to 8.2. It is said to fix these issues.
I was lucky, I didn't have any of them with the 5S. The 8.0 update worked well for me.

How does VoiceOver sound on the 6?

Post 33 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 07-Oct-2014 19:16:54

Same. The default voice is a bit better.
The Voice Over is in the iOS, not the phone though.
You have the male voice option as well in iOS 8. It requires some space, but not much.
I still use the female, but I have her on the enhanced voice. I think it is just what I'vve gotten use to.
The default is fine though.
The male is pretty natural, but it is odd to me, so I don't use it. It is good however.

Post 34 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 11:16:33

I wish there was a way to quickly switch between male and female. I have the male on now, because he breathes and sounds kind of more natural, but I like the female voice as well. Maybe there is just something I don't know at the moment.
Anyone wanta enlighten me?

Post 35 by ArtRock1224 (move over school!) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 12:24:35

You can add language to your rotor settings. Then under general/accessibility/VoiceOver/Speech, configure the voices you want in the language setting in the rotor.

Post 36 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 12:42:35

Ok that was really helpful.
I didn't know I could add U.S. again as a second language.
I did so and now I can switch between both male and female English voices.
I like the female for a lot of things, but would like to use Alex for some of the longer reading if I use the voice and not Braille.
Language is not available to select in my rotor. I could only add it in Speech and then it makes a rotor entry.

Post 37 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 16:37:37

does anyone know if I can change the voice on my iPhone five to Alex?
if so, does it have to be done with the roator, as has been said, or is there a different way it can be done?

Post 38 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 16:43:10

You can, Chelsea, because the 5 has a good enough processor.
So go into Settings > general > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech.
Then you can select Alex, it will have to download. Keep that window open and swipe to the percentage so you know it's downloading.
Once's that's done you will need to back out all the way out to Settings at least, so everything saves. Then do your triple click home to shut off VoiceOver then triple click home again to start it up.
It only does this the first time to start Alex.
To add it as a secondary voice so you can switch between them do this:
Same place Settings > general > accessibility > voiceOver. But instead do Language, not Speech.
Select Add Language, and select American English, and now you have both voices, with a language rotor to let you swipe to select the one you want, if you're like me and want both.

Post 39 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 20:51:49

leo, would you be able to further explain how I select adding Alex as a secondary voice?
american English is of course the default setting, and I'm not sure if I choose the enhanced quality, or something else.
I'm usually pretty good at figuring things out, but I'm smart enough to not take chances with something that could potentially mess up my device more than it already is
with the bugs it has.

Post 40 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2014 20:58:51

I read the manual Apple has on the website now.
It covgers all the models that can run iOS8.
Apple.com
Then go to support.
Type in iPhone manual in the search box.
I learned that you can slide the second view down sothat it is closer to your thumb.
I like the second view, because the icons are bigger, but it was always at the top it the screen on my 6, so.
I, due to using the default view, am use to stuff starting right above the home button.
The manuals good.
I'm going to change over, and give it a try. I find shopping for music in the iTunes store is easier using the second view.

I have the 4s thinking about getting the 6 sometime this week. my question is should I tell the people at the Verizon store to transfer my numbers and stuff or once I bring the new phone home and I connect it to my pc will iTunes put everything back in my new phone? also after the IOS 8 update as you already know voice over shuts on and off a lot does this happen to the people who have the iphone 6 or only the old phones. and yes I did update to 8.02 and still the same shit.

VoiceOver is clunky on all iPhones that are able to install iOS 8, not just iPhone 6's.

Post 48 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 14-Oct-2014 22:26:02

I have seen voice over be clunky, but not on my 6 nor was it on my 5S.
I'd have Verizon load all my stuff. Pack everything up to iCloud, and when you put your Apple ID in, it all comes back.
Check out that sound quality if you listen to music.
Don't forget, your old phone is worst lots on trade if you buy the 6, so remind them.

Post 51 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Thursday, 16-Oct-2014 9:09:43

I have tons of issues on my 5! From voiceover completely restarting itself, to it randomly going silent. VO is still running because when I swipe I still get the VO sounds but, no speech.
The major bug I hate in IOS 8 is the inability to send an attachment from the messaging app without having to turn VO off first. A complete pain and messes up my personal work flow!

Post 52 by Juliet (move over school!) on Thursday, 16-Oct-2014 21:58:21

Ok, a couple questions here: first of all, what's this crazy mess I've been
hearing about people getting the 6 and IOS8 still running sluggishly and
voiceover crashing on them and the like? I have the issue with the sluggishness
on my 4S, but didn't think it would be an issue with the 6, considering the fact
that it's a newer model, and have heard mixed reviews on that.
Second, has anyone done the Sprint buyback program when it comes to the
4S, and if so, how much did you get back for it? I'm about to go to a store
Saturday, and would love to know ahead of time what to expect. I'm wanting to
get the 6 if they have them in stock, which hopefully they will, so can't wait to
go there and play around with one.

Post 53 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 17-Oct-2014 18:20:52

My 6 is not sluggish at all.
The only problem I've had so far is not being about to buy songs at random on iTunes. I'm not sure why, but the button doesn't work "buy song" everytime.
That is solved by just using my computer.
I had a problem with the fingerprint deal, but that fixed.
One feature of Skype wasn't working, but the latest update fixed that.
Buy the 6. The bugs asl usual will be smooth out.
If you purchase a 5S you'll most likely get 8 anyway.
I do think the 5S of still a wonderful device however, so if money's an issue, go that way. Or if you have small hands.
Women with small hands are not liking the larger devices, or some. I don't see that as a problem, but maybe.
Go hold them both and decide. Your provider will have them on display.

Post 54 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Friday, 17-Oct-2014 18:22:28

Learned how to do the double tap on the home button, which makes a hiss sound like a lizard shooting fire, and that moves the top icons down for a few seconds, for one-handed operation.

Post 55 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 17-Oct-2014 18:54:16

Yes, but OI've got mine set in standard display, or default. I'm not using the new display.
Normally, you see the pricing of the songs on the right side, but not for me for some reason.
Now, some songs I can buy, no sweat, but others no.
